when i got my plot, like most people it was a weed garden , over grown with california grass and nut grass.
the clean up committee helped to remove the surface , long grass and structure giving a head-start. i spent the first week digging out my plot 6-8 inches deep and turning the soil and removing the California vines. The nut grass is harder because it's looks like rocks. I did this section by section of 2 x 10 feet. i went solo daily from 8 am till noon, after 10 it usually gets really hot.the turning took me about 5 days for half (10')the plot, i than got the help of 3 other people and manage to the half (5')the other half. i so whin 8 days i had manage to turn my plot.after this happens your weed will grow very quickly, so each day day i de weeded the section i had done before. after i was completely done. i started planting i a little section to test out my soil. for next 2 weeks i went daily to de weed, i tried every 4 days too long, every day too fast, so every 2 days i would spend 45 Min de weeding. When it rains your weed will grow twice if not 3 times as fast.
i started planting my seeds, spinach, cilantro and arugula. in a small section of my garden covered it with a mesh and grills to protect them from birds. after a few day they sprouted , i let the grow. the spinch and cilatro transplanted well, the arugula did not, so i think. I have just planted arugula in the spot i want to grow it and i will see if the results are better. after 1.5 month my weeding is minimal every 4-5 days and i have began eating my lettuce , my cilantro and my spinach. i have now started planting more, knowing that my soil is good.
